Dr Coates qualified in 1978 at Leeds University Medical School. His postgraduate qualifications are DRCOG (Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), DCH (Diploma in Child Health and MRCGP (Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners).
He has worked as a GP since 1983 initially in South Yorkshire and then moved to Jersey in 1987 to join Halkett Place Medical Practice. In 2009 he became one of the founding partners in Island Medical Centre.
He has special interests in respiratory and paediatric medicine.
His is married to Jacquie who is the nurse lead and Clinical Manager. He has two sons Chris, who lives on Jersey and works in IT and Andrew, who is a junior doctor in Manchester.
His outside interests include mountains (walking up or skiing down!), golf, Bolton Wanderers Football Club. He will watch most sports and tried many!
